Nanoscale Activity: Nanotechnology Mitten Challenge

Time Needed: 30 minutes

Objectives:

  • To introduce nanotechnology with a hands-on activity

Activity Description:

This activity is designed to illustrate the idea that small things are best built using small tools. Students will be divided into groups and asked to build Lego models while wearing oven mitts on their hands. Then they will discuss the relationship between the size of the objects being manipulated and the size of the tools needed to manipulate them.

Activity Materials:

  • 1 pair oven mitts per student
  • 1 construction set with 30-50 small pieces for each group of students
