Polyhedral Model Kit Basic Directions: Rutile

Name: Rutile, TiO2

Uses: fundamental structure

Alternate Representations:

Definition of Polyhedral Representation:

The clear octahedron with pom pom inside represents the titanium atoms.

The red connectors represent the oxygen atoms in different positions in the structure.

Construction

Single Chain Subassembly

The three octahedra are joined on edge using the 3-prong, "modified" 4-prong connectors by inserting the connectors into the 4 equatorial holes in the center octahedron and then joining one octahedron on either side. Repest this process 4 times.

Joiner Chain Subassembly

The two octrahedra are joined on edge using the 3-prong, "modified" 4-prong connectors by inserting the connectors into the 4 equatorial holes on one octahedra and joining the second octahedron using two of the connectors. The other two connectors are placed in the holes on the edge opposite the joined edges..

Double Chain Joined Subassembly

The next procedure is to connect the first two single chains to the joiner chain.

Final Assembly

To complete the structure, the remaining two single chains are joined to the joiner chain.
