2020 BREW Focuses on Data and Generating Ideas for Science-at-Home Videos
The 2020 Breakthrough Research and Education Workshop (BREW) was held on Thursday, October 1st. 74 faculty, graduate students, postdocs, guest presenters, and staff attended. One of the themes of this year’s BREW was the use of data and machine learning in materials science. The second half of the event was the education workshop.

What is BREW?
The annual Breakthrough Research and Education Workshops (BREWs) are an opportunity for MRSEC members to share and discuss research breakthroughs from the past year and new ideas for future work.
One of the key challenges to developing high-quality content is distilling research breakthroughs into ideas for accessible and engaging educational resources. The workshops are a platform for attendees to channel their excitement for current research findings into ideas for new education efforts.
Since 2012, the BREW has generated 19 education/outreach ideas that led to 8 new activities, such as:
- The LC Sensor http://education.mrsec.wisc.edu/index.htm
- AtomTouch
https://www.brainpop.com/games/atomtouch/ - The Crystal Cave Game
https://www.brainpop.com/games/crystalcave/ - Metallic Glasses & Amorphous Materials

Wisconsin MRSEC strives to host inclusive and accessible events that enable all individuals, including individuals with disabilities, to engage fully.
